The Near Westside is a neighborhood that mixes residential and commercial uses where most families live in multifamily housing. Today, more than 6,400 people live in the community.

During the last decade, the population in the Near Westside has remained around the same size. We can also see that the area has changed in other ways.

The Near Westside is one of the poorest neighborhoods in the nation. Around 49% of residents live below the poverty line, which is over two times greater than the average for Onondaga County and three times more than the national average.

We can also observe how some of the indicators linked to future prosperity are currently performing.

Homeownership is low in Near Westside. Only 26% of homes are owner-occupied.

Housing growth during the last decade was negative in Near Westside. The number of local homes fell by 10%.

Long-term vacancy is high in Near Westside. Around 14% of homes sit empty and off the market, which is higher than almost every other neighborhood in the nation.

Self-employment rates are low in Near Westside. Only 4% of workers work for themselves.
